This is a list of symptoms associated with high Homocysteine levels.
- Accelerated ageing
- Alcoholism (and increased risk of having alcoholic withdrawal seizures)
- Alzheimer’s disease
- Anaemias (when related to B-vitamin deficiencies)
- Angina (chest pain related to coronary artery disease)
- Arthritis (both osteoarthritis and rheumatoid)
- Atherosclerosis
- Autoimmune diseases (such as insulin-dependent diabetes, ankylosing spondylitis, rheumatoid arthritis, underactive thyroid, Hashimoto’s thyroiditis)

- Brain wasting or shrinking in ‘normal, healthy’ elderly patients
- Breast cancer
- Cancers generally (including cancers of the colon, thyroid, leukaemias, skin)
- Cholesterol, elevated (high total cholesterol and/or LDL cholesterol)
- Chronic fatigue syndrome (often associated with the pain and tenderness of fibromyalgia)
- Cirrhosis or fibrosis of the liver (including alcoholic cirrhosis) Coeliac disease
- Colon cancer
- Crohn’s disease (with homocysteine levels often well above 40 units)
- Deep vein thrombosis (abnormal blood clotting)
- Dementia
- Depression, severe (especially in women)
- Diabetes (non-insulin dependent and insulin dependent)
- Down’s syndrome (high homocysteine is found in mothers of Down’s syndrome children; Down’s syndrome children, on the other hand, have low homocysteinel)
- Epilepsy in children and adults
- Fibromyalgia (especially when associated with chronic fatigue)
- Folate deficiency (which can lead to anaemia, anxiety, poor memory, stomach pains and depression, cervical dysplasa, spina bifida and pregnancy problems)
- Glutathione deficiency in liver, brain and elsewhere (which accelerates ageing and onset of Alzheimers, damages liver increases risk of stress-induced stomach ulcers, and is associated with sleep disorders, cataracts, allergies, addictions, AIDS and cancers of the lung, prostate, skin, bladder and liver)
- Heart abnormalities (when present at time of birth, that is, congenital heart defects)
- Heart attacks (myocardial infarction)
- HIV/AIDS (the speed at which the virus develops)
- Hypothyroidism (especially autoimmune thyroid nisease, Hashimoto’s thyroiditis)
- Kidney failure, chronic/kidney dialysis patients
- Leukaemias
- Memory decline in older age
- Mental retardation
- Migraine headaches
- Miscarriages
- Neural tube defects in babies (such as spina bifida, anencephaly)
- Qestrogen deficiency and post-menopausal symptoms
- Osteoporosis
- Parkinson’s disease
- Penile erection dysfunction
- Polycystic ovary disease
- Pregnancy problems (such as spontaneously recurring miscarriages, pre-eclampsia, gestosis, placental calcification, premature birth, neural tube defects)
- Premature death from all common causes
- Psoriasis
- Pulmonary embolism (blood clots lodged in lungs)
- Rheumatoid arthritis
- Schizophrenia
- Sleep apnoea accompanied by cardiovascular disease (sleep apnoea is also associated with snoring, temporary cessation of breathing, obesity, premature death)
- Sperm motility reduction (associated with infertility)
- Strokes
- Thyroid cancer
- Thyroid disorders (thyroiditis, hypothyroidism, Hashimoto’s thyroiditis)
- Ulcerative colitis (often associated with homocysteine levels above 40 units)
- Vasospasm, cerebral (brain) arteries, causing strokes (often associated with magnesium deficiency)
- Vasospasm, coronary (arteries of heart go into spasm, causing heart attacks, abnormal heart rhythms and premature death)Vitamin B12 Icobalamin) deficiency (which can lead to eczema or dermatitis, anxiety, lack of energy, poor hair condition, anaemia, asthma and calcium deposits, for example)
- Vitamin B2 (riboflavin) deficiency (which can lead to burning or gritty eyes, sore tongue, split nails and cracked lips, for example)
- Vitamin B6 (pyridoxinel deficiency (which can lead to depression, nervousness, lack of energy, water retention, kidney stones, hyperactivity and depression, for example)
- Zinc deficiency (which can lead to frequent infections, slow healing, short stature, poor dark/light adaptation, (lack of energy, low fertility, stretch marks, acne, loss of appetite and poor digestion, for example)
